Daylily Hybrids Coming On Strong

Posted on Feb 22, 2010 by DaMan

The Daylily hybrids that I started back in December have been coming on fairly strong. I would guess that I have had a strike rate of about 20% or so, although a lot of the failures are due to poor or old seeds, as opposed to the germination method. I am definitely doing much better then previous years, but there are more things to fine tune.

The primary lesson learned this year is that putting too much water in with a seed during the cooling (stratification) process (even a fairly brand new seed) will cause it to rot.

In prior years, I have been just putting them in the fridge (stored in small, sealed plastic baggies.) I had heard that a bit of water during stratification would increase the strike rate, so I mixed up a mostly water (with a tad of hydrodrogen peroxide) batch of spray and gave each one a squirt of water before putting in the refrigerator. Well, a ton of them came out soft/rotten.

Next year, I need to remember to just put a simple drop (get a dropper, not a spr ...more...
