Spec of Dry Weather Allows for the Transplanting

It's been about 8 weeks since we've had anything close to dry soil out in the yard, so this weekend's brief visit into the 50's has been a godsend. The snow is nearly all melted and several spots in the yard can actually be worked now!

Since I have been house-bound for two months, lots of gardening chores have been stacking up. With lots to do, I decided to focus this day on moving some of the items from my old house on Route 5, east of Richmond, Virginia, to my new house back on Wilton Road (and thus the reason for the name of this site : Wilton Gardens!)

Today, I moved four trees. Three of them were apples and one was a crab apple. I will need to stake them tomorrow, but I actually moved all but one as a bare rooted plant. This sort of goes in the face of what I have always done (dig up a big root ball), but the Master Gardener program here in central Virginia introduced me to some Tree Experts that have lead me to believe that washing off your roots and planting bare rooted is ...more...
