Peruvian Lily Seedling Surprise

Posted on Nov 09, 2009 by DaMan

This past February, I decided to try out the Peruvian Lily seeds, to see if I could get some to grow. Although the strike rate was mediocre, I did end up with 6 potted seedlings to nurse through the Summer and plant this Fall.

Around August, all of the plants appeared to start dying. At first I thought it was due to the dry nature, but ruled that out quickly. Was it the temperature of the black, plastic nursery pots? I seriously doubted it, as I moved them to a slightly shaded area back in early July.

In late October, I dumped one of the pots into a bin to use as soil conditioner and found a vibrant set of roots! These things were alive but had gone dormant! This was sort of a surprise, as I am at the Northern end of their range, so I would have expected them to definitely not go dormant when it got hot. But, that's exactly what they did.

I planted three more today, all with decent root systems. I have one left to plant, which I will drop in a spot along the backline. If none ...more...
