I do not recall if I lost one or not, but my strategy of potting up these bare-rooted yearlings worked great. Back in the Spring, I attended a 'Tree Give-away' put on by the Henrico Extension Agency. Actually, I was a volunteer (you pretty much become a slave of the extension agency when you try to become a Master Gardener). I picked up several of the Cranberry Viburnums, probably about 6 inches tall with a decent root system. All were dormant, but I potted them up and waited.
Even as small as they were, these little guys tried to bloom! In fact, most of them did put on at least one bloom! Regardless, I kept them in my holding area for potted plants and watered them through the Summer.
Today, I planted them along Wilton Road at my home in Varina, Virginia. All of them had nice root systems (one might have been on the verge of becoming pot-bound, but the rest were perfect) and I expect to see some great growth over the next few years.
