Last year's garlic was only moderately successful. I had several plants do very well, but none of the bulbs came out as big as the ones you see in the store. As I still believe that I can grow the big garlic, I am trying it again this year!
I believe that my problems were derived from one or both of the following : (1) soil or (2) moisture.
As to soil, this seems like the most likely scenario. The soil was a new mixture that I had tried for the 'new' raised bed. This mixture consisted of a clay foundation (from Wilton) and some other compost materials. When I turned this soil a couple of weeks ago (to plant the beets, spinach and turnips), there were still some fairly substantial clumps. But, I believe that I have successfully answered this problem in the new bed. It is a much lighter soil, that I added even more compost to yesterday.
