Back in March, I helped the Extension Agency for Henrico, Virginia in giving out a lot of free trees and shrubs. The goal is to get more trees planted out there. As a Master Gardener Intern, it was an opportunity to give some volunteer hours and do something fun. In the process, I picked up several kinds of shrubs and trees for myself!
One of these plants was a Cranberry Viburnum, a nice shrub that has a few seasons of interest and will hopefully be good bee food in the early Spring.
So, here I have a ton of bare-rooted trees and shrubs that I need to take back to my garden in Varina, Virginia and plant. I knew that there was a problem here - a large number of these things would die with any stressful weather this Summer. I know this from experience. You cannot keep up with 20 plantings when you are planting other items all Spring and Summer long. A bit of a dry stretch and you have a bunch of dead plants.
